This Tuesday, representatives of the Jewish Community of Chile (CJCh) met in La Moneda with the minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency (Segpres), Ana Lya Uriarte, a meeting that takes place days impasse diplomatic occurred on Thursday at the Palacio de La Moneda with the israeli ambassador, Gil Artzyeli.
The diplomatic representative had gone to La Moneda that day to present his diplomatic credentials to President Gabriel Boric. However, as he later recounted, he was not allowed to enter the Palace. After this situation, Artzyeli was summoned to the Foreign Ministry where the reason for what had happened minutes before was explained to him and, according to what he said, he was apologized for the situation.
On Saturday, meanwhile, from the government they reported that the receipt of their diplomatic credentials would take place on September 30 and confirmed that the reason for the impasse was the death of a 17-year-old Palestinian during an operation by the Israeli Army.
The situation caused annoyance in Israel, country that through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs described as “serious” and “disconcerting” the incident with Artzyeli and summoned the Chilean ambassador in said territory to a reprimand meeting. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Chilean Foreign Minister Antonia Urrejola held “a general conversation” with the President of Israel, Yitzhak Herzog, with whom he addressed the diplomatic impasse starring Boric.
Thus, during today’s meeting, hethat she had been summoned by the minister last Friday, September 16, The Minister of Sports, Alexandra Benado, the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Ximena Fuentes, and the Undersecretary of Segpres, Macarena Lobos, also participated.
Once finished, the president of the Jewish Community of Chile, Gerardo Gorodischer, indicated that “We were received in a very good way, there was a frank conversation where we had the opportunity to express our concerns and feel, it has not been easy for the community”.
“We believe that it has been an opportunity in which we have talked and we are entering a new stage to continue building, to work for Chile. There were heartfelt apologies.”he added.
After the diplomatic incident, Gorodischer assured that in recent days he has “seen how there has been an increase in anti-Semitism on social networks, that is the great issue here, when we have an opinion leader who makes these types of comments, what he generates in the citizenship is a validity of what he is sayingtherefore in this case an anti-Israelism, therefore anti-Semitism”.
