Twenty-five thousand tons of cherries, which are destined for China to start the Chilean fruit season, have been compromised in these four days of stoppage of truck transport in the country.

The president of the Federation of Fruit Producers of Chile (Fedefruta), Jorge Valenzuela, indicated that as an item they reject the mobilization of truckers and support the measures to normalize the situation, indicating that “just this Tuesday we inaugurated the 2022-2023 season in the Port of Valparaíso, and we expect a very good campaign for early fruit such as cherries and blueberries,” but added that “we must first resolve the logistical knots, and this situation only makes the problem much more serious.”

The fruit leader pointed out that emblematic cherry-growing areas of the Metropolitan and O’Higgins regions, such as Paine, Rengo and San Fernando, are collapsed for the transport of these containers, and that a situation of extreme pressure is being seen for producers .

For his part, the president of the Association of Fruit Exporters of Chile AG (ASOEX), Iván Marambio, warned of the serious situation in the Logistics Support Extension Zone (Zeal) in the Port of Valparaíso, whose access It was recently enabled this morning for the transit of fruit for export. All this, derived from the strike of carriers, which has already lasted for the fourth day.

“The situation has become critical for our fruit exports. We have been able to witness, while we were traveling some highways, that there are significant obstructions on Route 5 South. There are traffic problems in Paine, also between the Rosario and Rengo areas; but without a doubt the most complicated situation is being experienced in the Port of Valparaíso, where the strike by the carriers is preventing the normal operation of this facility, which directly affects the delivery of the fruit for shipment on the ships. ”, indicated Marambio.

And despite the fact that this Thursday morning the blockade in the port of Valparaíso was cleared, Marambio indicated that “unfortunately the ship that left last night left with less cargo. We hope that the situation today will be better, because a new ship is leaving this Friday, which we hope will manage to leave with all the cargo.
