The story of Francisco Rodríguez is particular. The son of a Spanish father and a Chilean mother, the midfielder for Winterthur in the Swiss first division was at some point in the crosshairs to be part of La Roja. However, at the age of 18, he then chose to continue his career in Europe, but almost a decade later, everything has not been as expected.

Renaissance

After a stint at Schaffhausen in the second category of Swiss football in the previous two seasons, today Rodríguez returned to the highest level in Switzerland. He is one of Winterthur’s standout players and has played seven of the eight league dates. Of course, his team is in last position with 2 points, like Zurich, but the tournament has just started in the European country.

Precisely, the Chilean-Swiss began his career in this last Swiss team. It was in the 2013-2014 season and then he had a spell in Germany in Wolfsburg and Arminia Bielefeld. He then returned to his native country, performing in Lucerne and later in Lugano, until deciding to drop down a category and play for Schaffhausen.

“It would be a dream to play for Chile”

A few months ago, Rodríguez spoke with AS and one of the topics discussed was his alleged dismissal from La Roja. “It seemed strange to me that the Chileans thought that I rejected easily, but it was not like that. For me, at that time, it was a normal decision, I was 18 years old. I didn’t feel prepared to play for Chile’s senior team”, said the midfielder.

“I thought that the right thing to do was to play for the Swiss Under 21s so as not to force the race that was going fast at that time. For me it was a great pride to be on a list with such great names, I could not even dream of that. After that, the doors were always open for me, but the Chileans did not take it that way,” Rodríguez added.

Regarding his current affairs, the offensive midfielder also indicated that “I am at a point in my life and in my career where I feel that I have experiences, I have matured and it would be a dream to be able to play for Chile. It is my mother’s country and she would be very proud to play for Chile. She may or may not pass.”

Now under the command of Eduardo Berizzo, La Roja is in a stage of reconfiguration after the great cycle that included the bi-championship of America. The friendly matches of the next FIFA date, against Morocco and Qatar, will mark the beginning of the cycle that aims to access the 2026 World Cup. Perhaps, Rodríguez can enter the consideration of the strategist of the national team.
