The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesusinsisted that the pandemic “is not over”, but acknowledged that “Your end is already on the horizon.”

“Just because we can see the end does not mean we have reached it”he warned. “We are in a much better situation than before, deaths are down and now we are registering 10 percent of the deaths that we were registering in January 2021,” she added.

“However, 10,000 deaths a week is still too many, especially when most of them could be avoided,” lamented the WHO director general.

Tedros also highlighted that two-thirds of the world’s population are vaccinated, including three-quarters of health workers and the elderly.

“In most countries, the restrictions have ended and life is much like it was before the pandemic,” mentioned.

The danger of new mutations

However, he reiterated that the virus continues to spread and mutate, and there is a danger that more dangerous variants will emerge.

“We have been going through a tunnel for two and a half years, we see the light, but it is still far away, and there are obstacles that can make us trip if we do not take precautions,” he warned.

Likewise, Tedros pointed out that “although we must have hope alive” of leaving the pandemic behind, that point has not yet arrived.

Vaccination, the key to the end of the pandemic

One of the obstacles is the gaps in vaccination. “Only 19 percent of the population in low-income countries have at least one dose of the vaccine, and access to life-saving treatments is still virtually non-existent in these places.”

At this point, you have concluded the agreement between the Global Fund and Pfizer to finance ‘Paxlovid’ using the ACT throttle.

“This agreement should have been reached earlier, but it is a necessary action to put an end to the pandemic“, he stressed.

For her part, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, leading epidemiologist at the World Health Organization (WHO), has insisted that “The virus is here to stay”but has clarified that “you can already see the light at the end of the tunnel”.

But what has to happen for the WHO to announce the end of the pandemic? “Each country has a different situation,” she said, adding that the organization’s goal is to “end the health emergency in all territories.”

“Each country has had different access to the tools to deal with the pandemic and they are in another phase. We cannot forget that we live in an interconnected world, which is why we want to put an end to the health emergency in all countries”, closed the epidemiologist.
